Buckeye Broadband: can you use your own modem?

Own modem allowed — approved list published

Yes — Buckeye Broadband allows customer-owned modems and publishes its own approved-device list. It names devices including Arris 3402 (Data & Phone) and Arris 3452 (Data & Phone). Buy from that list — anything off it may not activate. Every detail below is quoted from Buckeye Broadband's own page, last checked 2026-08-25.

  1. Your modemyou buy it, or you rent it
  2. Your ISP's networkthey decide what connects
  3. The internetthe part you actually want
Your equipment has to satisfy Buckeye Broadband before it reaches the internet at all — which is why their published rule, not a retailer's compatibility claim, is the one that decides.

Which modems does Buckeye Broadband approve?

Buckeye Broadband names these models on its own page. They are the exact make and model strings published there as of 2026-08-25 — a sample of the list, not necessarily all of it.

Can I use my own modem with Buckeye Broadband?

Yes, with a restriction: the device has to appear on Buckeye Broadband's published approved list. In their words: "Customers have the choice to rent a cable modem or provide their own device." NO on Buckeye Fiber (see excludes). Modems bought elsewhere must be verified against the list first and then activated by phone: "Please verify the modem is approved on the list above, prior to purchasing." Customer must call 419-742-4244 so the CMAC can be linked to the account — "If there are no labels on the modem or the CMAC is missing, we will not be able to link the modem with your account."

Do Buckeye Broadband's requirements change with my speed tier?

"*Please note that some model limitations may apply such as approved speeds and an included WiFi router." The page does not break the list down by named speed tier.

Can I use my own equipment with Buckeye Broadband phone or voice service?

Combined modem/router permitted — the page's own footnote says model limitations may include "an included WiFi router", and the list marks models as "Data & Phone" or "Data Only". For fiber WiFi the page states: "Buckeye Broadband recommends SmartNet powered by eero for WiFi router needs."

What does Buckeye Broadband not allow?

Buckeye Fiber: "Buckeye Fiber requires an Optical Network Terminal or ONT. There currently is no retail ONT device compatible to work on the Buckeye Broadband platform. A permanent and professionally installed ONT device is included in every Buckeye Fiber Internet plan." So on fiber there is nothing to buy. Also: "Modems are not covered by a Buckeye Broadband warranty."

One box — a “gateway”

  1. Modem + routerone unit does both jobs
Buckeye Broadband treats the modem and the Wi-Fi router as separate questions. Read their wording below before assuming one box covers both.
