Can I use my own modem with GCI (Alaska)?
Yes, with a restriction: the device has to appear on GCI (Alaska)'s published approved list. In their words: yes, conditional on certification. Verbatim: "Although GCI provides cable modems for customers at no charge, GCI supports customers using their own equipment. GCI may prohibit the use of certain cable modems because of security and/or compliance issues. All customer-provided cable modems require GCI certification if not already on the supported device list below." Also: "GCI cannot guarantee that any non-GCI owned equipment will work with our Service. We may not be able to support or troubleshoot this equipment and will not be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of any equipment that we did not provide."
Does GCI (Alaska) charge an equipment rental fee?
"GCI will provide you with a cable modem at no additional charge."
What DOCSIS version does GCI (Alaska) require?
No DOCSIS version number is published. The Internet Terms & Conditions (https://www.gci.com/terms-conditions/internet-service) state only: "Any Customer Equipment submitted for certification must, at a minimum, be approved by the FCC and also be CableLabs DOCSIS certified."
Do GCI (Alaska)'s requirements change with my speed tier?

What does GCI (Alaska) not allow?
"GCI may prohibit the use of certain cable modems because of security and/or compliance issues." No specific make+model is named as excluded. Also: "If GCI finds customer-owned equipment to be detrimental to the network, GCI will mandate the immediate removal of that equipment regardless of certification or any "end of support" date." For mobile-network-delivered plans: "For any GCI services delivered over our mobile wireless network (including but not limited to Rural Wireless Internet), you must only use the equipment that we certify for use with these plans."
