Windstream: can you use your own modem?
Yes — Windstream allows customer-owned equipment, but publishes technical requirements rather than a list of approved devices. Owning your own replaces Windstream's monthly equipment fee. Match every requirement below before you buy — a device that misses one will not activate. All of it is quoted from Windstream's own page, last checked 2026-08-25.

How do I find a modem that works with Windstream?
Windstream publishes requirements rather than naming specific devices, so match anything you shortlist against the requirements on this page, then confirm the exact model with Windstream before ordering.
Can I use my own modem with Windstream?
Yes. Windstream permits customer-owned equipment that meets its published requirements. In their words: "When you choose Kinetic, you can provide your own device, or you can lease a router and modem built into our Kinetic Gateway device. This gateway connects to our network and distributes an internet connection to your home devices. Kinetic Gateways work across all internet connections."
Is Windstream the same as Kinetic?
Yes. Kinetic is Windstream's residential broadband brand. Windstream support URLs now permanently redirect to gokinetic.com, and Kinetic's published equipment terms are the ones that apply to Windstream internet customers.
Do I still need Windstream's equipment on fiber?
Yes. Kinetic Fiber installation requires a Kinetic-installed optical network terminal (ONT). Your own hardware sits behind the ONT — it does not replace it.
What is the return deadline if I stop renting?
Thirty days. Kinetic's terms state modems must be returned within 30 days after service is terminated, or the account is automatically charged a fee.
Will Windstream help set up my own modem?
No. Kinetic states plainly that it "will not be able to assist with any 3rd party equipment," and directs you to your device manufacturer's manual or support site instead.
Does Windstream charge an equipment rental fee?
Kinetic operates a "Modem Rental Program" with "a monthly recurring equipment fee that covers repair or replacement by Kinetic of damaged modems." The amount is not published on the terms page.
How do I activate my own equipment on Windstream?
Windstream does not publish a self-service bring-your-own activation procedure. Its residential broadband runs under the Kinetic brand, which states "When you choose Kinetic, you can provide your own device, or you can lease a router and modem built into our Kinetic Gateway device" — but also that "Kinetic will not be able to assist with any 3rd party equipment," directing you to your device manufacturer's manual or support site for setup. Fiber service requires a Kinetic-installed ONT regardless of which router you use.
What should I watch out for with Windstream?
Windstream and Kinetic are the same ISP — windstream.com support URLs now permanently redirect to gokinetic.com, so Kinetic's equipment policy is Windstream's equipment policy. Support is explicitly disclaimed: "Kinetic will not be able to assist with any 3rd party equipment." Fiber installations require a Kinetic-installed optical network terminal (ONT); only the router or gateway behind it is replaceable. If you rent instead, Kinetic "retains all rights, title and ownership interest in and to the modems."
What does Windstream not allow?
No device class is banned, but support is explicitly withheld: "Kinetic will not be able to assist with any 3rd party equipment. Most of the information you need to set it up should be included in your Static Kinetic Welcome Letter with your Static IP information. Usually, set up instructions can be found in the user manual of your equipment or by going to the manufacturer's support website." Do I have to return Windstream's equipment?
"Modems must be returned to Kinetic within thirty (30) days after Services are terminated, or your account will be automatically charged a $100 fee."
